Funded principally by the office of National Core Facility Program for Biotechnology (NCFPB) launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Synchrotron Radiation Protein Crystallography Facility (SPXF) has been developed for high-throughput protein crystallography at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). Operated by the Protein Diffraction Group, the SPXF provides a complete spectrum of protein-crystallography capabilities from same preparation and characterization to data collection to computation for structure analysis. MAD data, diffraction data from microcrystals, and conventional diffraction data can be collected with extremely rapid throughput. The SPXF is a "national core facility" open to scientists from academic, industrial, and governmental institutes by submitting proposals that will be peer-reviewed by Proposal Evaluation Committee (PEC). For all SPXF beamlines, 65% beam time is dedicated to independent investigators, and the remaining 35% beam time is used for SPXF staff, development, and maintenance.

Technique

The SPXF facility contains a Multi-wavelengths Anomalous Dispersion (MAD) beamline with energy tunability from 6.5 keV to 18 keV for unknown structure determinations , and a monochromatic (Mono) beamline with energy fixed at 12.4 keV for fast crystal screening and high-resolution structure study. In general, the MAD beamline is capable of collecting 800 useful MAD data sets per year, and the Mono beamline is capable of collecting 1200 useful high resolution data sets per year.
